I am British and I live in Wales. Why do so many youngster claim they are just Welsh. Britain has mixed with many races and we are all the same now. What really bothers me is that alot of people from South Wales have English or Irish ancestors and they claim they are Welsh. Many don't speak Welsh there for they are not Welsh.

GET A GRIP YOU BRITISH NOT WELSH.

I WOULD RATHER BE BRITISH THAN BE BRANDED AS WELSH.

My welsh GF said this to me and i am still barely learning Welsh please help.
lol She was saying bye to everyone when i said I love you to her, so that explains it

What language are studying actually and why?

Hi.
Persons that often stay in this category know that I'm studying english (I hope to do better with it).
I have to do it for job becouse in Italy like a lot of nations in Europe we have english as a second language.
Ok, so , I saw here that many of you are studying polish, hindi, chinese, japanese, pakistani, welsh...
Why? Who is the reason of your choice? Is it for work or a simple pleasure?
Thank you in advance for the answer and for your patience on reading my bad english.
Please, if there are mistakes correct it.
Sorry TWK.

Welsh is spoken in Argentina in Chubut

and i know that some forms of gaelic are spoken in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and so on,

Is Gaelic spoken more in canada/Usa than Welsh is in Argentina?
Alu it, wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg? Habla usted Galés?

And thank's jock but i think your wrong there because there are around 60 000 Scottish Gaelic speakers in Scotland aren't there so ?

What is the pronunciation of these Welsh names?

I just finished reading Bernard Cornwell's "The Warlord Chronicles" and was wondering how to say the Welsh names. I found some on his website, but the two that I wondered about the most are "Seren" and "Gwydre".

Thanks for your help!

I prefer those poems to be written in Irish/Welsh. Does anybody knows any websites with a lot of Irish/Welsh poems especially written in these languages. Can you give me..?

and I should mention that those poems should be written and spoken thru Irish and Welsh...

I consider that many Welsh females are disrespectful, vulgar, repulsive, obese, small-minded, whores. I am from Wales and I have had many females disrespect me. Laughing hysterically at me and impolitely talking back.
Hahaha racist? That's a new one.

Welsh Television/Movies?

Can someone please name some Welsh Television programs(like caerdydd) or Movies? They can be Welsh language or just accent.
I realize this should be in the entertainment section but I thought maybe I would get more answers here.

Help learnin welsh!!!?

I'v lived in wales my whole life and love the country, i am 14 and learn welsh in school although not enough to become fluent! Could you recomend any free online sites that could help.
I do speak welsh just not very well..
Thanks xxx

I know that most languages start with many changes based on region and other languages influencing; but once a language has been established, what language hasn't changed much?

For instance, a branch of the Celtic languages like Welsh, or a branch of the Romance languages like the Catalan language. Have these changed much since they were established as a spoken language? Have any others?

Any languages that you know of that haven't changed much?

I want to learn some welsh?

I just love the sound of the language,i'm Irish so I don't know if that would make it easier or harder.

Can someone give me some words or sentances and pronounciations please? I know one word-Crymru!

because we say: diwrnod SANTES Dwynwen
or SANT Meiriadog. Is it just something that changed over the years in spoken welsh?

is very much alive!25% of us speak it,and it is on the increase big time.I am fluent in Welsh and English. Also i think Wales should be indipendant, vote plaid!Rydw in meddwl dyled Cymru fod yn annibyniol ac hefyd rhydd or Saeson.Ni ywr goreuon yr byd yma,ac yn anwedig rygbi.

in wales do you start speaking welsh if you want to have a private convo in a public place for example train, bus, etc ,

non welsh speakers do you find this offencive if welsh speakers change there language when 'you' enter the room or carriage or bus etc

or do you just accept it as part of normal life in a welsh speaking area ??

I'm asking this because on the way home from college me and a friend were having a private convo in welsh when this english man comes up to us and tells us that we should not be speaking our language as other people find it offence if (we were standing in the doorway of a 2 carriage train because there were no seats ) we carried our convo on and had him glaring at us for the next hour !!

do you think its acceptable to ask somebody not to speak there own countries language in there own country ??

i would understand if we were in england or scotland because its nice to respect the other countries if you can (as in speak there lang)

your opinions ??

xx

I know Davie, Tommy but who else? Is there a total count/list somewhere? I need to know for a research paper i'm writing and I can't find them all

welsh oral exam and needs ideas!?

hi :D
i have a welsh oral exam in a month and i have to talk for 5 minutes about a particular subject. It needs to have 5 points. For example,
Subject: First World War
point 1. why did it start?
point 2. who was involved?
point 3. the life as a soldier?
point 4. how did it effect the country/welsh language?
point 5. how did it end?

so i'm stuck thinking of a subject, i dont want the common ones like obesity, anorexia, credit crunch etc.
any ideas?!

Say whether it's your Native language, Second language or so on,

The status of the Welsh language?

After reading answers from other questions,it is obious to me that most people dont know a thing about the Welsh language.I speak it fluently, diolch yn fawr, but most people think of it as a dying language that no-one cares about.Or,even more annoying, mix it up with a toatally different language gaelic.Welsh is from Wales and Gaelic is from Scotland,to simplify it for Americans reading this.More than 20% of us welsh speak it and many more have(50%)a basic understanding of it.iT is used and very alive,so proudly Spoken by many a countrymens tounge, including mine. So,if think otherwise, have a view or something to say....ANSWER NOW!!!!!

i've read some time ago that only 4.93 % of welsh people speak welsh, and i know it's the same in Ireland and Scottland with gaelic and in France with breton, provençal. i know they should also speak english and french because is the official language, but I think they(irish, scottish, welsh) should learn how to speak these languages fluently, after all....is part of their culture!

I ask this because in Spain we have other languages appart from Spanish(galician, catalan, basque) but they all(or at least, most of them)can speak, read, write them in Galiza, Catalunya and Basque Country.

thank you for the answers! it would be nice to have any answer from irish, scottish, welsh people.

sorry for the spelling, I don't know if I wrote it all propperly!

What’s the best way to learn a letter in Welsh?

For my Welsh GSCE, I have to learn a letter of application for me to tested on it. I'm finding it hard to learn. I'm allowing to bring in a sheet of 36 words which I have put on sentence starters, Gwelais i eich hysbysed etc and long words/adjectives, ddefnyddiol, berthnasol etc.Since I'm finding it hard to learn, any hints or tips would be welcome.

Welsh-Americans?

I am Welsh and i was just wondering how many Americans of Welsh decent are there in American.Unhryw un cymraeg yna mas yn America? And are these so called welsh-americans aware of their roots, where wales is,the welsh language and so on?
ps I am a fluent welsh speaker, and without welsh people there wouldent really be a america, really, just check it up some time.

Do more speak welsh than speak Irish Gaelic?

Are there more second language welsh speakers than second language Irish Gaelic speakers?

Do more speak Irish as a native language than speak welsh as a native language ?

And so on .
The North isn't more welsh speaking than the south . Wales is more linguistically divided by west to east. The West is more welsh speaking than the east. But there is a welsh speaker in every village in Wales.

Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire are both in the south and so is northern Swansea, Northern Pembrokeshire, Western Neath and portal bot and Powys all these places are more welsh speaking than English.
You have to be fluent in welsh to teach and primary basis yes. And yes every university in wales has an "Adran Gymraeg" where all courses are through the medium of welsh, In ireland im rold it's only irish that can be studied not other subjects through that medium. Also how come the irish on Roadsigns is italica and seems assif it is not as important as english?

Also Ireland only has one county where over half the population speak's irish on a daily basis welsh has 4 . with larger populations in all.
No no, I am so sorry if it's coming across like that!

I have great respect for the Irish and their language. I am so sorry. I am doing Celtic Language studies and am just trying to compare. I am not trying in anyway to make Welsh superior. We welsh aren't like that and i certainly don't want you to think that. I am really sorry.
