Welsh in Wales is very much a minority language and is just about to become an official language, and I believe is also the language of Government. What status does/ will English hold, and will non-Welsh speakers continue to be able to hold public office? In addition, will all (even small) businesses have to be bilingual? I speak many languages and am very comfortable with using different languages, but, despite having pleasant experiences in social interaction with many mother tongue Welsh speakers, ordinary spoken Welsh is elusive to me as there are many cultural barriers between first language Welsh speakers and first language English speakers, which make to possibilities for fluency in Welsh very limited. Also speakers of Welsh often seem to have huge hang-ups about "getting it right", which leads to slowness in propagating their spoken language. How will this all work in practice? I have no fixed point of view and certainly no axe to grind, but am curious as to how this will work without acting unfavourably against those with no Welsh in the jobs and public office market. Can anyone give me an overview? Will English now become a second-class language, offering limited possibilities in decision-making positions? Clearly I need to know this, as our current business is in a growth phase (along with my family), and we need to plan ahead about whether we will be able to contribute adequately to the new Welsh nation....

Here is a paragraph from Wikipedia to support your answer:
"England and Wales are constituent countries of the United Kingdom, which is a member of the European Union and EU law is effective in the UK.[5] The European Union consists mainly of countries which use civil law and so the civil law system is also in England in this form, and the European Court of Justice, a predominantly civil law court, can direct English and Welsh courts on the meaning of EU law."

Again im talking about presently..

I want to be properly bilingual, in a language that I can speak to my parents family etc, even though I live in the UK. My mum and I both want to become properly bilingual and we've narrowed our choices down to French, German, Spanish and Welsh. If anyone has any other suggestions they would also be helpful.

I have "am byth" and "tad" but I don't know how is should be written

What are Turks like?

What exactly are Turkish people? Are they like middle eastern or are they white people? I honestly do not know and I am dieing to know. They speak Welsh right?

What's the sexiest accent? What's the worst?

How can I talk to a guy with a Welsh accent? (yummy!) I live in Canada...

Worst accent has to be either a Newfie accent or one of those deep southern drawls - they truly do sound like they just fell off the turnip truck...yep, howdy ma - I jess done milkin' them thar cowwws! Oh, just thought of another one - people who don't know how to say "ask" properly, so they say "ax". What's with that? They don't sound cool, they sound stupid.

Elizabeth I?

I was reading a biography of Queen Elizabeth I, and I am confused about something the author says. The author is talking about Blanche Parry, a member of the household staff. I quote: "...and it is assumed that it was she who taught the great-granddaughter of Owen Tudor to speak Welsh."

The author does not include a family tree and does not discuss Elizabeth's lineage other than her father. But I count five generations from Owen Tudor to Elizabeth, not four.

If I remember correctly, Owen Tudor married Katherine of Valois (widow of Henry V). Owen and Katherine gave birth to Edmund Tudor, who married Margaret Beaufort. Edmund and Margaret gave birth to Henry VII, who married the daughter of Edward IV (another Elizabeth) and sired Henry VIII.

That would make Elizabeth the great-great-granddaughter of Owen Tudor, not the great-granddaughter. Did this historian get the family tree wrong, or do I have my Tudors mixed up?

I'm writing a story, and for the story I need a Welsh male name beginning with S for one of the characters. I've found a few I absolutely adore, but my sister thinks they sound too feminine. If you were reading a story, would it really put you off if a male character had one of the following names?

Selwyn (SEL-win)
Sion (Shon)
Sionyn (Shon-in)
Sulien (SIL-yen)

Are all of them okay? Any of them?

Welsh phrases for a tattoo…?

Could someone please help with the translation... I'm Welsh, but not that good at speaking it. Here are my ideas:

To live and to love
My heart is with you forever
True Faith. True Love

Why do women hate me?

I'm 22 and an ugly virgin. They never talk to me, never look at me and never acknowledge my existence and when they do it's to verbally abuse me in the middle of a street. I know this probably has a lot more to do with Welsh women, considering the majority have no manners. When ever I try to talk to a woman, they either ignore me or look at me weird. Why?

I know it's probably because I'm ugly, but I've seen uglier men date attractive women.

The Celtic languages are . Irish, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic. Manx. Cornish and Breton.

I speak Welsh it's my first language native language, I have a cupla folca in Irish, i am a beginner at Cornish but i can understand Cornish fluently when spoken due to it's similarity to Welsh
I am fully fluent in German, Welsh, English and Afrikaans, Can get by quite well with Spanish and Dutch also with cornish.

How come you are fluent i 7 languages before your own that makes no sense to me what so ever?

Ble mae dy barch am dy iaith? Where's your respect for your language?
Diolch pudleddu o ble yng Nghymru wyt ti?

Do you think that sign language has accents?

For instance, the German would have solid movements, where as the french may have more fluid movements. If you're signing to the welsh, you get covered with phlegm still!

Also would like the correct Welsh phraseology for saying to someone "I'm excited" so I can text a Welsh speaking friend without them laughing at me :)
Diolch yn fawr

Is the Welsh so very difficult to learn? How different is the language from Irish Gaelic? How is the syntax and grammar different, if it is so?

Are there programs to learn Welsh in uni? Where in Canada or America can a person learn English. If I have to go to Wales, where is the best place to learn Welsh?
I've read Pat Ford's translation. I enjoyed it very much.

However, I'm wondering how has the comparing of it been for any of you scholars or "fans" of Welsh or Arthurian lore?

His name is Garrett and this is his journal from when he's eight. You can just read parts. He reads a lot so he isn't that bad of a writer.

I decided to call you Journal because Diary is for girls. Dad had Michael Cicero bring over his kids. He knows I've been lonely since Mommy died. I could use a friend. Michael has five kids. Amato is Alden's age. Giuseppe is Lance's age. Alex is my age. Fiona is a year younger than Jeremy. Paulie is a year younger than Colin. I like Alex best. My birthday is October 2nd. His is November 29th. Dad told Michael who told Alex that I'm not happy. So that's why I have you now Journal. I can't wit to see all your pages filled up. It'll be like a book. I'm glad Alex gave me you, Journal.

Alex's real name is Alessandro. He's Italian and Welsh. He gets his dark skin and brown hair from his dad and his blue eyes from his mommy. His mommy and dad are very kind. I've known them for a long time, but I never got to meet his kids until now. They travel a lot, though, so Alex doesn't get to see them that much. I figured Alex could stay the night when his parents are gone.

Today Alex and I went to the big oak tree. If I look out my window then I can see it above all the other trees because it's in front of my window but a few yards away since it's in the forest. It takes a few minutes to get there if we walk. We decided to build a tree house. Dad got some of his employees to build the tree house. It's great. There aren't any walls. It goes in a circle around the tree. It has a railing. It has a foldable roof. We can go out there in the rain.
If anyone's curious Alex and Garrett end up falling in love =) But it ends tragically for them! Or does it?

Whoopi Goldberg asked this on some talk show and I completely agreed with her.

My distant ancestors came from Wales, but you don't call me Welsh American do you?
Jimmy - if that's true, then why on earth would black people be okay with being called that?

Celts originated in the Alps of Austria and Switzerland which are now Germanic lands, apparently the Irish are not related to them genetically so does not mean Celts are not really a people with any genetic continuity?

and to extrapolate on that, since most Irish people and Scottish and Welsh people speak English, aren't they really more of a Germanic people nowadays?

Is it more like Dul-lin?

I am sick of being sent messages by Yahoo saying i have violated the sites rules by posting in my native mother tongue or simply asking a question in Welsh. I fought it was called Yahoo Uk and Ireland?. If so why is Irish breaking the Rules as well. How come speaking in my own language is breaking rules?. The ballad of the W.N all over again.
It's against mine and your human rights to be denied the opportunity to communicate and use your own and native language or any language in which you wish to use.
How can we change this because i don't know about you lot but i am not prepared to stand and be discriminated against for using my chosen language. They are racist fascist bigots.
If Quebec can have a French language page why can't we have 1 of our own a welsh one an Irish one and so forth?.

Fox hunting and a new horse?

So I've been doing a little bit of eventing and a lot of show jumping. I've been riding for 13 years, english for about 7 or 8. I'm starting to get a little big for my current pony/horse a 14.2 arab/welsh, Juliet. I was talking to the barn owner where we board and I said that I was thinking of selling Juliet. She's been looking for a horse for her grand daughter and she loves Juliet but she also said one of her friends has a gorgeous gray fox hunter gelding, who knew a bit of dressage and would jump anything you put in front of him and that since she was good friends with the girl she could probably talk her into giving us a good deal. So I was wondering what you guys would think of this deal? And what fox hunting is like? We'd probably lease the gelding for a month or two to see if I like fox hunting and I like the horse but I just kinda want an idea of what it's like to compete, I go and watch them all the time. If you guys need a little more info just tell me, I'll post.
Danke!
Chelsea.
Kiwix. I think you get the image straight out of black beauty. Here they only do scent drags and believe me the people here aren't going to risk hurting their horse.
Hunter/jumper they don't actually kill the foxes if they even use a real one. Once the fox goes underground the riders call it a day or go find another one to chase. I can promise it is not like Black Beauty I was at one a few weeks ago.
If I get the horse it will be doing chases (prexplained where once the fox goes under the riders call it a day). I've watched them, I just wanted to know what it's like to actually compete in them.
Or just the scent drags. I live in northern VA we have tons of drags and chases. The fox dosen't actually ever get hurt. Promise.

Other than standard English, Gaelic (in Ireland) and Welsh (in Wales), what Celtic languages still survive ion the UK and Ireland? What is the most ancient language in Scotland that is still spoken? Is there a ancient language other than English spoken in England? Thanks

New research by "Visit Wales" researched what visitors thought of Wales?

The research found people enjoyed the Welsh countryside, mountains and beaches. They also liked seeing Castles.

They said Cardiff without the Millenium Stadium was just another city, which I agree with. It's only on matchdays that you truly see Cardiff as a capitol city.

However the part of the research I found really offensive was where it said whilst visitors from most countries (especially Ireland, France and Scotland) enjoyed hearing the Welsh language being spoken, the English hated it.

Does this show English racism?

Question to welsh speakers New website?

Hi,
Im planning on making a site and I would know if any welsh speakers or any one who understands welsh would be interested. Im not a good welsh speaker. And I am learning welsh for G.C.S.E's. But I am fairly good with I.C.T.

So im planning on making a site in comparison to youtube. Not a copy of youtube but the same Idea. Except a few differences.

* The site would be all welsh.
* All user can Post video about about themselves or what ever ( Sort of like youtube ) but in welsh.
* If you join you have your own channel, profile ( similar to a youtube channel or facebook profile.

So thats my basic Idea but I would like to know if there are any welsh speakers who would be intrested in becoming a member of this site. If so please comment.

Oh yes almost forgot.

The name I have come up with for this site is -

FideoYnCymraeg

My welsh is not to good right now but I think translated that means
