I'm quite an independent person, and I'm bright, I passed my GCSE's with flying colours, but I get bored very easily. I want to do something different, I want to drop out of sixth form because it's boring and everyone there looks down on me because I'm an English student in a Welsh school (although I speak Welsh fluently). I'm good with financial planning, and the occupations I desire to follow don't need any qualifications. I want to be a model, entrepeuner, actor, fashion designer, ebay millionaire or something like that you know. I'm so frustrated with school at the moment and I just want to leave and live on my own, any suggestions?

Wales is a country in it's own right, not just part of the UK, and we even have our own language here, how cool is that......well yahoo don't seem to think so, they keep deleting me whenever I ask if anyone here can speak welsh, so I'm using this question as a test to see if they delete me again.

Are there five native languages in the UK? English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish and Shetlantic, or is Welsh, Scottish,Irish maybe Shetlantic the Gaelic languages really the same? lol i got a feeling i may insult some people in saying that.
I feel that i should know the answer really as i live in England, but i just haven't listened to the languages together to see for myself how they differ etc, even though i go to north Wales almost every year to see my auntie (she doesn't speak Welsh) and i listen to Celtic Woman songs i have never thought to compare them, i don't think i have even heard Scottish or Shetlantic.
Please be nice to me

I would like to say "I try to see everything positively and enjoy every day", which I translated as "Dw i'n ceisio gweled popeth posidiol a mwynhau diwetydd". Does that make any sense?
Also, how does one translate "and many other things"?
Diolch yn fawr iawn!

So far I've only read Trainspotting which I think is a great book. At first I found it somewhat difficult to read since it was written in the Scottish dialect. However, once I got used to this I thought it was a very entertaining and sometimes darkly funny novel.
So what do you think of his work and style of writing?
BQ: What are some other books that are written in a particular dialect or accent?
BQ2: Favourite author from Scotland?

And by no means am i calling you americans stupid its just a general question.Im Welsh, live in Wales, speak Welsh and so on.
Approx 3%of the population of the usa are of Welsh decent.Abraham Lincoln was Welsh.
The defining feature of the Welsh is that we speak Welsh, but also English as we are a bilingual country.

I know a lot of foreigners cause I live in a diverse part of Chicago, and since I'm a minority with them, I try to understand and get along with them. I was born here, so I speak both Spanish and English fluently. I know a lot of foreigners who hate English speakers(in a more general term, the White Americans) because they constantly make fun of their accent.
This is my question, why don't people realize this is the same treatment in other countries? When my English friend moved to Wales for a while, she got picked on by some because she didn't speak Welsh. And when she tried to, she was ridiculed by her accent being "bad." I'm sure it's this way when people move to other countries. I've heard of bad experiences in travelings where the natives say something like "oh always trying to speak English, what a controlling ignorant American"
So don't pretend like other countries aren't jackasses too, and expect you to speak their language in their country.
And I agree with the whole "speak our language better" thing. It's not slavery anymore, people CHOOSE to come to America. If you wanna live here, learn the language. There's a lot of misconception in Mexico that coming to America means more job opportunities and a better life. Not really, life is hard everywhere. So learn the language and quit speaking broken English unless you plan on never conversing with another English speaker, which is unlikely since that's our dominant language. (I may sound a little harsh, especially because my grandma is this way, but it's true)
I would learn another country's if I were moving there, and whenever I was teased, I'd treat it as inspiration to do better so that someday I won't be teased. In fact I learned Spanish first because as a baby I lived in Mexico most of the time so that was most beneficial, and when I started going to kindergarten in the US to learn English, I was picked on a lot because I had an accent. And that's a good thing, because it's hard to get far in America with a silly accent I couldn't control and my mispronounced words, and now I speak English just fine.
I think people choose to ignore this fact because of all the American hate in general. >:

Wales is a small country of mountains and sea-coasts in the west of Britain. The Cambrian mountains form its backbone. In 2005 the population of Wales was 2,900,000 people. The majority of them live in the southern valleys and in the coastal areas where the main urban centres are situated.Cardiff is the capital city, while other major towns are Swansea and Bangor.
Even if everyone in Wales speaks english, 20 per cent of the inhabitants speak Welsh as their first language.Welsh is one of the six Celtic languages of Europe, together with Scottish Gaelic,Irish,Breton,Cornish and Manx.In Welsh tha name of the region is Cymru whic means "land of brotherhood".
In 1999, after a referendum, a National Assembley for Wales was set up in Cardiff. This body examines and decides all the matters that regard the people of Wales, like the social services, education, transport, the environment,etc..Like the Scots,Welsh people are very pround of their identity, their way of life and their traditions.Singing is almost a way of life for them.At rugby matches, crowds spontaneously start singing the national anthem "Land of My Fathers" particulary if Wales is playing against England!
THANK YOU HI

My parents are both English, I was born in Indonesia, and I live in Wales.
I have never lived in and have hardly ever been to England, I've only ever lived in Wales except from when I was a baby for a month in Indonesia.
I went to primary school in Welsh, I can speak Welsh and I've lived here all my life and I live in quite a 'Welsh' area.
I don't see how it makes sense to call myself English.. I've never lived there and I certainly wasn't born there.
But then again, I'm not Welsh either as my parents aren't Welsh and I wasn't born here either. I feel more Welsh than English though.
And I don't count myself as Indonesian at all! haha
What would you say?

It's a competition, I have to design a new logo [old one is a kid crying with broken arm + patched up teddy = very depressing -.-] and come up with a name + slogan
The charity/trust is called The Trust for Sick Children in Wales BUT it's basically a trust that collects money to let parents stay in a building next to the hospital completely free of charge so they don't have to travel if they have a terminally ill child in hospital.
The logo I've done is two parents, mum crouching, dad standing, beckoning a child and the kid is just out of reach, holding out his hand trying to reach back. It's all in silhouettes but the kid is wearing a blue hospital gown and a bandanna [the ones that some kids wear after Chemotherapy, it'll either have a welsh flag on it or just rainbow colours] Also, I'm contemplating putting a sort of roof-shaped "flick" over the parents or something as in a shelter but that might look as though the kid isn't allowed under shelter :L? ....anyway it's not totally finished but that's not overly important (:
What I'm having trouble with at the moment is the name + slogan. Right now the name is The Trust for Sick Children in Wales, and the slogan is "Make this your charity, please" <-with "please" written in a child's handwriting.
I'm completely stuck for ideas :S
I've been thinking about something like "Love heals best" or "Cadw'r Cariad/Keeping the love" as a slogan [Cadw'r cariad is the welsh translation] but you don't want to give the parents too much hope and the second doesn't make much sense... :S so I don't like that, or something like "_name of trust_ -because love has no boundaries" as in the love of the parents won't stop them from being with the kid? But I don't like that either =/
I wouldn't be asking unless I was desperate but I don't feel bad asking because the competition is to re-vamp the trust's image and to modernise it, re-naming it and getting a new slogan is optional, but requested if you get what I mean...
it's in for this Friday anyway so I really really need ideas :S
Thanks in advance x
P.S. IF you happen to speak Welsh, I'm making it bilingual but if you have any ideas in welsh, it would be cool
if not, no worries, the chances of a Welsh speaking person coming across this is insane :L x

I'm Welsh and strongly support us sepperating from England, here are my reasons:
1. We welsh speak a different language than the English.
2. We Welsh have a different religion to that of the English.
3. We Welsh are left-wing, whilst the English are right-wing.
4. Over the years we have had our natural resources stolen to fund England.
5. England in the past executed welshmen and whipped welsh children at schools for speaking Welsh.
6. I believe the Welsh econemy would do better than it is at the moment if we were independent, in the same way as other small European countries' econemies are doing better.
I wanted to know what others from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Europe or the rest of the world think about Wales and Scotland splitting from England!

The meaning of the name Llewellyn is Leader.
The origin of the name Llewellyn is Welsh.
I've heard the pronunciation 'clu-ell-inn' but I think the more used pronunciation is 'loo-ell-inn'.
I'm not planning on using it but I'm curious of what you all think.

I don't know the official names but in English there are
the different American accents - general, soft southern, hard southern, California, Boston, Brooklyn, Long Island, Chicago, Minnesota
British - all the hundreds they have - cockney, scouse, scottish, welsh, etc.
Irish
Australian
In the Spanish speaking world, is there a country that has the most accents (like the UK for English)?
Is there a more common accent such as the general accent that both US and Canadians mostly have?
What is the most harsh (IMO Scottish for English) and what is the most gentle (soft southern English for me)?
Is one considered more elegant (IMO Received Pronunciation) and one less intelligent (IMO hard southern)?
The only two Spanish accents where I can tell a difference is Spain Spanish because they sound like they are lisping.

Welsh in Wales is very much a minority language and is just about to become an official language, and I believe is also the language of Government. What status does/ will English hold, and will non-Welsh speakers continue to be able to hold public office? In addition, will all (even small) businesses have to be bilingual? I speak many languages and am very comfortable with using different languages, but, despite having pleasant experiences in social interaction with many mother tongue Welsh speakers, ordinary spoken Welsh is elusive to me as there are many cultural barriers between first language Welsh speakers and first language English speakers, which make to possibilities for fluency in Welsh very limited. Also speakers of Welsh often seem to have huge hang-ups about "getting it right", which leads to slowness in propagating their spoken language. How will this all work in practice? I have no fixed point of view and certainly no axe to grind, but am curious as to how this will work without acting unfavourably against those with no Welsh in the jobs and public office market. Can anyone give me an overview? Will English now become a second-class language, offering limited possibilities in decision-making positions? Clearly I need to know this, as our current business is in a growth phase (along with my family), and we need to plan ahead about whether we will be able to contribute adequately to the new Welsh nation....
