how about you?

Wales is a small country of mountains and sea-coasts in the west of Britain. The Cambrian mountains form its backbone. In 2005 the population of Wales was 2,900,000 people. The majority of them live in the southern valleys and in the coastal areas where the main urban centres are situated.Cardiff is the capital city, while other major towns are Swansea and Bangor.
Even if everyone in Wales speaks english, 20 per cent of the inhabitants speak Welsh as their first language.Welsh is one of the six Celtic languages of Europe, together with Scottish Gaelic,Irish,Breton,Cornish and Manx.In Welsh tha name of the region is Cymru whic means "land of brotherhood".
In 1999, after a referendum, a National Assembley for Wales was set up in Cardiff. This body examines and decides all the matters that regard the people of Wales, like the social services, education, transport, the environment,etc..Like the Scots,Welsh people are very pround of their identity, their way of life and their traditions.Singing is almost a way of life for them.At rugby matches, crowds spontaneously start singing the national anthem "Land of My Fathers" particulary if Wales is playing against England!

THANK YOU HI

Welsh in Wales is very much a minority language and is just about to become an official language, and I believe is also the language of Government. What status does/ will English hold, and will non-Welsh speakers continue to be able to hold public office? In addition, will all (even small) businesses have to be bilingual? I speak many languages and am very comfortable with using different languages, but, despite having pleasant experiences in social interaction with many mother tongue Welsh speakers, ordinary spoken Welsh is elusive to me as there are many cultural barriers between first language Welsh speakers and first language English speakers, which make to possibilities for fluency in Welsh very limited. Also speakers of Welsh often seem to have huge hang-ups about "getting it right", which leads to slowness in propagating their spoken language. How will this all work in practice? I have no fixed point of view and certainly no axe to grind, but am curious as to how this will work without acting unfavourably against those with no Welsh in the jobs and public office market. Can anyone give me an overview? Will English now become a second-class language, offering limited possibilities in decision-making positions? Clearly I need to know this, as our current business is in a growth phase (along with my family), and we need to plan ahead about whether we will be able to contribute adequately to the new Welsh nation....

The Celtic languages are . Irish, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic. Manx. Cornish and Breton.

I speak Welsh it's my first language native language, I have a cupla folca in Irish, i am a beginner at Cornish but i can understand Cornish fluently when spoken due to it's similarity to Welsh
I am fully fluent in German, Welsh, English and Afrikaans, Can get by quite well with Spanish and Dutch also with cornish.

How come you are fluent i 7 languages before your own that makes no sense to me what so ever?

Ble mae dy barch am dy iaith? Where's your respect for your language?

How different is Wales to England?

Hey, I'm from Ireland & I really want to go to Wales. I know allot of English people who tell me that there is no real difference between Wales & England. I've been to Scotland before & it's different to England but doesn't feel like a total different country but you can definitely sense the different culture.
From what I know Welsh people are very proud of their culture such as their language, countryside of north Wales, accent & descending from different people to the rest of the U.K. But is this enough to seem like a different country to England because its in the same state as England (U.K).
Since I'm from Ireland of course there are similarities to the U.K. but we have enough to be a different country. What we use that's different to the U.K. is kilometers, euros, we have a total different culture, there are areas in Ireland called Gaeltachts where people speak Irish as their first language, we have our own sports like hurling & Gaelic football, we have our own tv channels and programmes. I could list allot more things but I think you have the point.
Any help is really appreciated!

Rwyf wrth fy modd eich cerddoriaeth ac yn gweithredu, rydych yn talentog iawn.
It's meant to say - I love your music and acting, you're very talented.
Trying to impress my mate whose first language is Welsh. I am Welsh myself I just don't speak the language. :L

I am in North Wales where, to many, Welsh is a first language; however, the majority of the population also speaks English just as fluently. But, in my parish church, there is one lady there who kinda "coos" at the English hymns and really sings during the Welsh ones (service is bilingual). How is it possible to have not been exposed to the English language in the UK?

As a Welsh man I wish I had 2 pence for every time I have heard the following quoted as a gospel truth;

" I walked into a pub in North Wales and everybody was speaking English - but when they realised I was English they all switched to Welsh!" (insert shock and suprise and perhaps some racist undertones here)

This awful piece of casual racism fails in the following ways.

1: Why would a bunch of people who speak Welsh as a first language prefer to communicate in English in their own pub? Novelty? For practice?

2: Why should an English manwoman/facist care if the locals communicate in their OWN SODDING LANGUAGE!!

This ridiculous myth has been trotted out more times than the old chestnut...

"I'm not a racist but..."

Next time somone tells you that this happened to them... tell them they are a liar and a racist to boot.

Honest to god I heard this story THREE FUCKING TIMES today! If it was really true every pib in Wales would full of the fucking English 24/7.

Heard once that it's his first language. but can someone verify anything at all about his language skills? citing the URL would be helpful. thanks.

Does everyone in Wales learn Welsh in school?

I know that about 20% of Wales speaks Welsh as a first language, but do native English speakers learn it in school or elsewhere? Are most people in Wales conversational in Welsh?

Why is Welsh a hard language to learn?

ive heard that Welsh is very hard to learn unless it is your first language. does anyone know why?

Welsh,Irish,Scottish Gaelic,Manx,Cornish and Breton!

My favorite is welsh because it's my mother tongue my first language and i love it's poetical rhythm! Also i think it's just a beautiful language.

Can someone help me translate a quote into Welsh?

"Life is not measured in the number of breaths we take, but in the moments that take our breath away."

I've looked it up on web translators, but I want to double check. Preferably with someone whose first language is Welsh.
Thanks!

Since Glyn has promoted the Welsh language on BB7?

Has anyone else considering learning Welsh?
Welsh is my first language which I speak fluently at home and with my friends and family
