For a native English speaker who also knows French, German, Latin, and has knowledge of many other languages, how hard is Welsh to learn? Is the grammar regular? Is pronunciation easy and spelling phonetic?

Best Celtic language to learn?

I can't learn it right now, because my hands are full with German and Japanese. But I have half-Celtic ancestry (English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish), so would eventually one day like to add a Celtic language to the list of ones I know.

I know that Welsh is the healthiest in terms of survival (Wales still has a strong linguistic identity unlike Scotland and Ireland - and growing), but how easy is it compared to the others?

Are Scottish Gaelic and Irish essentially just novelty languages today? Are are they still used in significant numbers elsewhere.

Thanks for reading and for the upcoming answers.

If you could instantly learn any language, out of these, which 10 would you most like to learn?

Also, which languages do you think are the most important languages to learn?

Do you think that people from English-speaking countries should make more effort to learn a foreign language, even though English is the world's most widely-spoken language?

If you think Yes, then what languages should we learn?

P.S. I have a basic knowledge of French, German and Welsh, do you think that any of these languages are of use internationally?

Are the Welsh Ancient Britain's or Celts?

I know that alot of Irish people are of Scotish decent because of what Cromwell did and so their languages are similar and they can understand each other. But my father, a Welsh speaker told me that he can only understand very few words of spoken Irish. Those words being simmilar to Welsh but most of the language is completely different from the Irish and the Scottish. My father and brother say we are not Celts but Ancient Britains and that the Cornish spoke the same language as us. We lived in Britain before the Celts arrived.

I LIVE IN ARIZONA.........

I know that obviously the UK speaks English, but there is also Scottish and Welsh. I also know in Ireland they speak both English and Irish. I did some wikipedia reading, but would like a native of the area to explain the relations of the languages to each other (how they developed), which is most prevalent among people and in what setting each is used, which languages are used officially, and anything else you might like to throw into an overview.

Thank you!

How do you say this in your language?

"Independence for Wales"

"Free Wales"

"We're Welsh not English"

"We Speak Welsh"

"Wales forever"

Most appreciated as much languages as possible please

Thank you very much,

Which language should I learn…?

Basically, I need to do a language at GCSE level because my school doesn't offer it and on the course I want to apply for, it's almost vital you have a GCSE in any language.

So, what should I learn? I'm thinking of only learning enough to get to C-B level, how long should that take? Suggest anything really, most stuff is available at GCSE and I'll be taking it as an External Candidate via self-study.

I'm always wanted to learn Welsh, but I have no real reason for doing so, I'm not Welsh and I don't even live in Wales. Oh well, I'd rather learn Welsh over Polish or Urdu anyday.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Also, are there any languages that are easier at GCSE level than others?

Scottish people being anti-Welsh?

Why do so many Scots, especially the Nationalists have such a problem with Wales? But what do you base your opinions on?
When I go to Wales, I see more of a country than Scotland. Because you all speak English, your national anthem is in English, you're trying to wipe out your languages (I'm not including 'Scots' as it's just a dialect of English). Also, all your signposts are in English, but I do know you have Gaelic ones in some areas.
The Welsh still have their own language. Scotland chose English as their language, while the Welsh were forced to speak English. Yet, they have saved it from dying out.

I have more respect for Welsh people, as they have more respect for their country. They don't base their nationality on hating us, and are proud of their culture. Wales has had cultural nationalism, and I don't think Scotland has ever had something like this. Also, Scotland went into the Union, because you were bankrupt by the Darien scheme, and England bailed you out, yet you still hate us! Independence- You're so blinded by anti-Englishness, you'll do anything to get away from us, even at the expense of your country's wellbeing.

Why do you believe that you've been oppressed by England, and Wales has had an easy ride? Do you know their history? Why do you enjoy being 'victims'? Why do you have this 'Braveheart' mentality? It's 2009!

My girlfriend is Welsh, and she had a lot of hassle in Scotland for being Welsh. She speaks her language, and so do her family. They're really proud people, and I have never seen this in the Scots. Just anger and bigotry. And not just towards the English and Welsh. Heard some nice anti-Irish chanting from Rangers fans.
I'm not aiming this at all Scots, just the ignorant ones.

borrowed words spoil languages.?

Who else agrees that it is a real shame when smaller languages start borrowing vocabulary from larger languages like English? I hate how Welsh (which I speak fluently) has borrowed many hundreds of words from English over the years. Welsh is an ancient and very unique language indigenous to the land of Wales, but it is sadly being spoiled by all the continuous borrowing. I think that unique languages like Welsh and Irish should be reformed, with the borrowed words removed and replaced with original words (or strings of original words to form new concepts). Who else agrees?

translation in welsh/irish, please!?

Hi, there!

I am a bit confused as to what languages are spoken in Scotland and Ireland, other than English, of course. It looks like both countries come from a similar background, yet their languages differ.
I need this text translated in welsh, or the language the Scotland's ancestors were speaking. I should be so lucky if somebody who knows both languages will take a look at my humble request.

"NOT EVEN DEATH CAN STOP ETERNITY"

Here comes the tricky part: I need one word, ONLY one, translated in old Irish.

I am trying to write a book, and this small phrase is meant to sent my heroine into a search quest. Having one word in Irish in this phrase, it will give her the certitude she's not wrong.
I don't care which one is the word, as long as it is from old Irish.
Thank you!

Old English, Old Irish, or Middle Welsh?

To you, which of these languages- Old English, Old Irish, or Middle Welsh- is the more interesting early medieval language of the British Isles and which supplies the best corpus of literature?

Which language is the most difficult for the English speaker to learn? Which one is richest in vocabulary?
Or just general impressions!

What is the easiest language to learn for me?

I've spoken English my entire life and I want to learn a second language. I've narrowed it down to a few languages, but I'd be happy to take other suggestions. I'd like to learn Latin, German, French, Dutch, Chinese, Swedish, or Welsh.

If you would, please suggest a way to learn the language, too (personal tutor, Rosetta Stone, etc.). I'm on a budget, too.

Where can I learn a different language?

The question? That's the easy part. The language? It's Elvish :) Lord of the Rings Elvish to be exact. There is a way to learn it but I am unsure how or where. I would love for someone to help me out with this; even if it's a bit far fetched :) There are two languages I believe, and I would like to learn the language that Aragorn can speak. I also believe that the language is based off of Finnish and Welsh, if that helps at all.

How hard will it be for me to learn Welsh?

I am a native English speaker and I'm fairly good with French, but even though I've always wanted to learn Welsh, will it be easy? French was quite easy for me, and I think languages like Spanish and Italian will also come easily because they're Latin root languages... how about Welsh? Has anybody learned Welsh as a second/third language?

I prefer those poems to be written in Irish/Welsh. Does anybody knows any websites with a lot of Irish/Welsh poems especially written in these languages. Can you give me..?
I prefer those poems to be written in Irish/Welsh. Does anybody knows any websites with a lot of Irish/Welsh poems especially written in these languages. Can you give me..?

How many languages do you speak?

I speak only english,french,italian,
croatian,and a bit of german.
And Latin but it is a dead language so I don't know.
I would love to learn welsh!
What about you people?
I am definitely not a show-off!
I just want to know how many people speak
more than two languages!
Mislim stvarno!

i've read some time ago that only 4.93 % of welsh people speak welsh, and i know it's the same in Ireland and Scottland with gaelic and in France with breton, provençal. i know they should also speak english and french because is the official language, but I think they(irish, scottish, welsh) should learn how to speak these languages fluently, after all....is part of their culture!

I ask this because in Spain we have other languages appart from Spanish(galician, catalan, basque) but they all(or at least, most of them)can speak, read, write them in Galiza, Catalunya and Basque Country.

thank you for the answers! it would be nice to have any answer from irish, scottish, welsh people.

sorry for the spelling, I don't know if I wrote it all propperly!

Prayers in a foreign language

Can anyone provide for me any Christian prayers preferably in the following languages:
Welsh, Gaelic (Irish or Scottish), French, Hebrew, German, Esperanto, Romansh, Romanian, and/or Russian.
If you don't know any prayers in these languages, any prayers you do know in any language is most appreciated.

I speak six languages myself (Irish Gaelic, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Romanian, English and Greek)

And I often have a problem with inserting foreign grammer into my words, endiing up in what my friends call "Yoda speak" or when i get frustrated, either cursing in another tongue or translating it into English while cursing.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Does Catherine Zeta- Jones speak Welsh?

What is Welsh? It is the language of Wales!
Welsh isn't a language? You must not be British... it's the official language of Wales, and everything governmental in Britain is in both languages!!!!!

I know all 3 languages are within 20 to 25% of each other of being the same language, but can speakers of one language understand the other 2? I've been told that this is true of Cornish and Breton, but what about welsh?

This is just for intellectual curiosity because I really love languages a lot. :)

If Queen Elizabeth or Prince Charles or Prince William are in line for the throne or are currently on the throne, do they need to speak Welsh or Gaelic? It seems as though it would make sense even if they usually use English, but I was just wondering.

Thanks in advance. :)

btw i Speak welsh it's my native language but with english and other languages as they are what are the chances?

is it possible to learn Welsh or Breton in Canada?

I'd like to learn one of these languages and live in Toronto
