This is a continuation of my previous question. If you answered that one, thank you. If not, that's fine too.
I'm writing a novel set in Wales and would like to use Welsh names. I have some names for each gender, but I'd like to narrow it down a bit. Please list all and any that you like. If you like none of them, that's okay. But please be open-minded, since this is for a story. Thank you.

Emlyn (EM-lin)
Emrys (EM-ris)
Galahad (GAL-eh-had)

Hywel (HOW-el)
Lewis (LOO-is)

I have a manchester accent.
I.E cud a borro ya cher? Instead of could i borrow your chair?
But my mum and all her side of the family are welsh. Everybody says I talk with a welsh twang.
Do you think you'd be able to understand and manc/welsh speaking person?
Everybody who isn't from wales or manchester say they don't understand a word i'm saying but they love the uniqueness of my voice.
at least you understand me well enough so that i could give my explanation. The problem is i don't have one

You stroll through a town like Swansea and all you see are orange-faced, fat or pregnant slags. They are either following their junkie boyfriends around with faces like pigs. Drinking in broad daylight in front of kids or taking heroine in the middle of the street. The men look like guidos or chavs with no hope in life. I thought Wales was nice, I’m never going back. Their accents sound so horrible, you’d swear you’re talking to seagulls.
When I go to Austria or Germany, the women are so beautiful and polite.
Yes it is, I live here I know.

Hello I'm giving a speech in Wales at a wedding and would like to say a few sentences in Welsh. However all online resources just have the Welsh spelling without any help in the pronunciation.
Could anyone help with the Welsh translation AND PRONUNCIATION for:
Hello Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for coming to the wedding of X and X. Because it's such a joy to see so many of you on such a special day, I wanted to be able to thank you in fluent Welsh.
The actual phrasing can be altered to make it work in Welsh. Any help is so appreciated.

I have family in Wales who we decided to visit for the first time for a wedding just recently and was really surprised.
I live in the UK, so I wasn't a tourist or anything, but as an American, I went to various different cities like Cardiff and Swansea and people were incredibly nice to me! But when I went to a very small town, people weren't so nice, which I understand the whole not-used-to-diversity thing, so it made sense.
So, instead of me talking to people, I figured, Hey, maybe they will be nicer to my boyfriend (who is English). No, they were way worse to him...haha. If he would talk, most of them would just mumble something, be very short with their answers, or just ignore him. You know when you see someone who is clearly talking about/making fun of you from a distance? That happened a lot when we were talking. I was really surprised! Of course, again, this was in a small town though, so that could have been it. Any ideas? In England, I always hear people cracking jokes about the Welsh, but I figured it was all in good fun...
@Harrison----Okay...Let me rephrase my question to please you then since I wasn't TRYING to generalise. Do a lot of Welsh people TEND to not like the English. I only ask because it wasn't a one time thing where I've seen them act like that to each other. Jeez.

HI
My boyfriend is Welsh, and im moving to Wales with him next year, only prob is im half English and living there at the moment Im half Irish and lived there 3/4 of my life, when my boyfriends friends thought i was American (big mix up with his ex) they where fine with me when they found out i was from England some took the piss.
I know most of the Welsh hate the English, ive tried everything from learning Welsh History, spending as much time there as possible, and even trying to learn the language. I love my boyfriend and hes very proud to be Welsh and when we have our own family i want them to be Welsh and and proud of it...
unfortunatly im not proud of English History but its not my fault...What should i do to stop criticism??
No there maay not be a Wales without England but at least then they wouldnt have to suffer been ruled by the damn queen...Wales should have there independance just like northern Ireland should!!

I'm Welsh. I live in Wales. These names are normal here in Wales. I understand that you may think they are weird but that is just because you may not be from Wales. Please don't just say "I hate it" or "That name is awful". Please explain why you like it and why you don't like it. Thanks.
Name - Aderyn
Gender - Girl
Origin - Welsh
Meaning - Bird
Pronunciation - ad-EHR-in
Thank you.

Basically, I need to do a language at GCSE level because my school doesn't offer it and on the course I want to apply for, it's almost vital you have a GCSE in any language.
So, what should I learn? I'm thinking of only learning enough to get to C-B level, how long should that take? Suggest anything really, most stuff is available at GCSE and I'll be taking it as an External Candidate via self-study.
I'm always wanted to learn Welsh, but I have no real reason for doing so, I'm not Welsh and I don't even live in Wales. Oh well, I'd rather learn Welsh over Polish or Urdu anyday.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Also, are there any languages that are easier at GCSE level than others?

I've seen on several websites that St. Patrick was probably a Brythonic Celt, and born - if not in Wales proper - in a Welsh-speaking area.
Does anyone know of any scholarly sources (particularly biographies) that might mention such details?

Is English Killing of Welsh, Gaelic, Cornish and Manx? Because only 20% of Wales now speaks Welsh and assuming its one of the oldest NON-CHANGED lanuages in the World, Is Welsh Becoming Extinct?

Hi, I'm a yank, and an ignorant one at that. In my travels abroad, I've met plenty of Irish, Scots, and more than enough Englishmen. My dad is descended from Welsh immigrants. I've only heard they're "sheep shaggers" but then the English say that about everyone. And I know Tom Jones was from Wales (I think). So tell me, is Wales a great place? What are some uniquely Welsh characteristics? Do people still speak the native language?

Who else agrees that it is a real shame when smaller languages start borrowing vocabulary from larger languages like English? I hate how Welsh (which I speak fluently) has borrowed many hundreds of words from English over the years. Welsh is an ancient and very unique language indigenous to the land of Wales, but it is sadly being spoiled by all the continuous borrowing. I think that unique languages like Welsh and Irish should be reformed, with the borrowed words removed and replaced with original words (or strings of original words to form new concepts). Who else agrees?

I am in a relationship with a wonderful welsh guy, however it seems the small community he lives in, where i will be moving to, to start a family, seem to live solely on everything that is welsh, and i am all for honoring the place you grew up in however it is a dying race. its great if you never want to leave wales.
Looking at his friends, sister and nephew (sister is 10 and nephew is 9) when they leave a message on face book everything is spelt really badly, and im not just talking your usual spelling mistakes, and not just the kids either the adults seem to really struggle.
everything is done in welsh including school which i can accept and am willing to learn welsh to help my child however i want it to have the best start and that means a good education, the school there seems to have let his sister have 5months off school with a broken leg! no homework went home to her and no one seemed bothered.
can I in your view actually raise a child to a good standard of education?
I will be pushing my child and i know that sounds bad but I will be sitting down and doing homework and pushing for more so they can lead a fulfilled life.
is this possible?

My best friend was like this when i frist met him and so all the over Welsh people i have spoken to outside of Wales

what I want to know is, are there any Welsh-speaking people in Wales who cannot speak English? do you know any or have you heard of it?
I mean, obviously there are people who speak at home in Welsh, take their schooling in Welsh and might effectively ending up very rarely speaking English, but that is not what I mean. I mean people who actually cannot speak any English or only have a really basic knowledge of it, like in the same way an English person might know a few words of French or something? weird question I know, just curious!

Have you ever gone to Wales, and gone in a bar or a shop or a cafe, and theres Welsh people in there talking to each other in English, but when they hear you speak, they start to talk to each other in Welsh?
Let me point out, I would never be so arrogant as to be offended by welsh people speaking welsh when in wales! So why arent they speaking welsh in the first place? They are always speaking english, then they hear an english person, and switch to welsh!

I'm not talking about recent immigrants from the Middle East or southern Europe, but NATIVE Welsh people whose ancestors lived in Wales for many centuries. For example, Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Rhys-Davies. They look very Spanish, Italian, or Greek.

I am interested in learning Welsh, but I have no previous Welsh exposure and I am English and do not live in Wales, so finding speakers would probably be tricky. I find Welsh a facinating language, yet how hard would you say it was for a native English speaker to become proficient in it, how would you say it compares to other European languages?
From the small amount of study I've done, while it is obviously very different to English, the sentence structure is quite similar and sentences are built in the same way. Would it be fair to say Welsh's complexity is no worse than French or German?
Thanks

I am writing a 10 page research paper on Paganism in Wales during the Middle Ages. I was wondering if anyone has any links, books, references, personal stories, etc that they could share. I found a book on Llewllyn the Great that mentions a little bit about Merlin and a couple of other druids, but I need more! Thanks in advance!

I was at a hotel in Wales and I walked up to the front desk. The woman asked me something in Welsh and I said "I don't speak Welsh." She took me aside and said that they don't speak English to the English just to piss them off and that she would for me. It made me lol.

I understand that English is a major language, but I don't understand why we have to have English lessons at school, when English people don't bother to learn Welsh? It's the co-language of the UK! Some English people even live in Wales & don't bother at all to learn it ?? :@ Grr...
