Which should i learn German, Welsh, or Gaelic?

I want to learn a foreign language but i cant decide one and none besides German Welsh or Gaelic. Im in my 2nd year of German in High School so i have previous knowledge of German but i don't really try in that class so i haven't learned as much as i should of i guess. Gaelic- Im an Irish American and i have a ton of irish/scottish background like My great great great great aunt was the Queen of Scotland and i absolutely love the culture of Ireland. Welsh- Im going to want to some day live in the UK, Germany, or Ireland and Welsh seems like a pretty cool language, i do not have any previous knowledge of Welsh. So just whats your guys opinion on what i should learn and most likely i will end up living in one of these places?

Well, you have a head start on German. Maybe you should start TRYING.

Who on earth are you planning on using Welsh or Gaelic with???

I’m going to tell you something…it is VERY difficult to find resources on the Gaelic languages, and Welsh? There are HOW many speakers of Welsh? (or Gaelic, for that matter, and they ALL speak English, so, why bother?) and Welsh has, like, no vowels, making it VERY difficult to read!

Stick with German, and start applying yourself.

Gaelic is a dying language, unfortunately. I think more people should learn it to keep it going, and it would be a pretty noble thing to do simply because of your heritage. However, you’d probably get more practical use out of German, or even Welsh to a lesser extent.

Unless you’ve got family members who speak Gaelic or Welsh whom you’re dying to communicate with, I’d say stick with German.

You should definitely learn Irish Gaelic!

Obviously your heart is not in German and you should not be wasting your time trying to learn something that you are not that interested in learning. Unless you are around alot of German speakers, you will quickly forget everything that you have learnt as soon as you finish high school. I have met dozens of people who allegedly learnt a language in high school, who can’t speak a word of the language because they weren’t truly interested in it and never spoke it once they graduated.

Welsh does seem like a pretty cool language but I would not recommend it unless you are genuinely interested in the history, music, culture of Wales. Learning a language is a huge endeavor that requires YEARS of study so I wouldn’t recommend Welsh unless you are really passionate about Wales and all things Welsh.

Irish Gaelic is a minority language that is not widely spoken AT ALL, so there are no utilitarian reasons for speaking it. If you choose to learn Irish Gaelic, you are doing it because:

    • You are proud of your ethnic heritage and see the value of learning the language of your ancestors.

    • You are interested in the amazingly beautiful poetry, music, and folklore in the Irish language – by the way, I have no Irish ancestry at all but have been studying Gaelic (for 2 and a half years now) for this very reason :)

    • You want to visit, or live in Ireland someday and want to understand all of the place-names and converse with people of the Gaeltachtaí (Irish speaking regions) in their native language. This would certainly make any visit to Ireland much more meaningful for you!

Well, I guess my advice to you would be to learn the language that you are really interested in because it is the one that will be the most fun for you and therefore enrich your life the most.

p.s. If you do decide to learn Irish Gaelic, feel free to let me know and I can show you some resources that are available.

Hi, Id recommend learning Irish Gaelic! definitely! I studied through Irish for six years and I’m really annoyed that I let it lapse for the last while. It’s a lovely language to learn and contrary to popular belief there ARE a lot of resources out there to help you get started. Because of your interest in your heritage and the irish culture (which is Extremely interesting and a really enjoyable one to live in!) it would give you that extra push to learn this language.

It IS a dying language and so id love to encourage you to learn it! i love the fact that I can speak irish and whenever I come across someone else who can (which is not as rare as you might think) we always have a great chat about the language, where and how we learned it and what a shame it is that more peple dont speak it!

You dont sound like your heart is in learning German and if you plan on moving to either ireland or the UK I cant see german being as usefull to you as Irish would be….say on a trip to Galway or Donegal! the Gaeltacht communtiy would be a great place to visit if you can speak the language and I promise you’ll enjoy learning it!
