Why do so many Welsh kids always say “I’m Welsh NOT British”?

I am British and I live in Wales. Why do so many youngster claim they are just Welsh. Britain has mixed with many races and we are all the same now. What really bothers me is that alot of people from South Wales have English or Irish ancestors and they claim they are Welsh. Many don't speak Welsh there for they are not Welsh.

GET A GRIP YOU BRITISH NOT WELSH.

I WOULD RATHER BE BRITISH THAN BE BRANDED AS WELSH.

Because Wales is a part of Great Britain, they hate being labled that. They are trying to form their own government.

They live, born and raised in Wales, not England. They have a separate government, besides having The Queen as their sovereign. Get a grip buddy, they are proud to be who they are.

Seems to be the same in America. people say "I’m African American, but they, and their parents as well were born in The United States. I don’t get it either. You are an American with African descent.
So, British with a Welsh descent should be the answer.

It could be the education system or their upbringing. Is there a Welsh passport? Of course not.

Talk for yourself mate. I live in South Wales. Carmarthenshire and the majority of people here’s first language is welsh so what are you going on about?. And to you maybe because you don’t speak welsh you don’t feel the connection. To be welsh you must speak the language it keeps our culture alive and the reason we see ourselves as welsh not British is because that’s what we are.

I am 14 and i am welsh Not British. And people in wales are feeling proud to be welsh again. What is British ness?. An over dominance of English culture enforced on others. If you want that then so be it . But leave the others do as they wish. We are welsh not British and that’s it.

Welsh people are rightfully proud of their ancient heritage. But of course the early Welsh WERE Britons–Welsh is a much later name given them by saxons!
but that aside, it has actually been proven by dna that there is not a huge amount of genetic difference between the different peoples of Britain-the main differences are CULTURAL! most of us have PRE-CELTIC ancestry dating between 7000-14000 years ago,and that includes the English as well (well over 50 percent) though of course the incidence is even higher in Wales and Scotland.

British doesn’t mean English. British refers to the relation of the collective countries on the Isle we know as Great Britain. The English are just as British as the Welsh, and the Welsh are just as British as the English. Saying you’re British is like a Canadian saying they are North-American. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Wales and England and Scotland all happen to be countries on the Isle of Great Britain; thus they are all British. Simples. C:
